Trying to get investors to hand over hard-earned money is not easy. Of course, what you say is important, but often the teaser, the slide deck or the business plan, is what tips the balance. Getting the tone and content of these right is vital.
When presenting an investment to investors, Alan’s initial goal is always to get their attention and excite them about the possibilities for the future.
In the case of Exergyn, yes, it was a small pre-revenue company located in north Dublin, developing an engineering product. And so it was natural for investors to expect the company to go the way of many such “successful” startups – to get bought out for a modest sum by a multinational, looking for an R&D adjunct.
The challenge, therefore, was to:
- Reveal the far more exciting truth: Exergyn’s future was as the only commercial solution to an unavoidable problem for a trillion dollar industry; and
- Convince investors that Exergyn could turn this vision into reality – that it could execute on its promises.
Dozens of investors came on board in multiple funding rounds. The written word was key. It’s what convinced them to give Alan a hearing; and it’s ultimately what convinced them to invest.
It’s also what won the company a €2.5m grant from the EU.
And, for Alan personally, it’s what got him a two-book deal from a major publisher. And it’s what won him corporate clients for his negotiation training course.
You’re about to send a document that could affect future negotiations. Are you sure it’s as good as it can be?
Or perhaps it’s an update going out to investors and you’re hoping for more investment. Will it inspire them?
What about that speech you hope will shine a light on you and your company? Is it shining the best possible light?
How valuable could it be if that update or teaser was an awful lot better?
